General Construction – Design Build – Project Management

As the Administrator for Premier Surgery Center of Pittsburgh and Acqua Blu Medical Spa, I oversee the day-to-day operations of the organization.  When the physicians asked me to be involved with the design and oversight of the construction of medical spa and surgery center, it was a daunting task.  Jim Thomas, President of CAVCON, brought his team to the table; and, they made the scariest experience so enjoyable.   Jim and the CAVCON team are just amazing.

The medical spa is a physician directed noninvasive facility featuring laser and skin services. Premier Surgery Center of Pittsburgh is a unique state-licensed, Medicare certified, privately-owned Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) providing same day, outpatient services for residents of the Tri-State area. The center occupies over 7, 000 square feet of space which includes three operating rooms, 7 pre and post-operative pods, 1 procedure room, and 1 pediatric room.

Prior to construction, we met with Jim Thomas, a medical consultant and an architect on the CAVCON team to review the types of medical procedures that would be most beneficial for medical reimbursement and identify the types of equipment and space needed for the procedures.

Based on those recommendations, CAVCON designed the both the medical spa as well as the surgery center.  Their recommendations allowed us to complete the project on budget.  Jim Thomas and CAVCON were with us every step of the way.  There are construction firms and then there are those with the medical expertise that CAVCON brought to the project.  If you have any type of a medical construction project to be designed and/or built, I would highly recommend the services of Jim Thomas and the CAVCON team.

I found CAVCON in the Associate Builders and Contractors of Western Pennsylvania Membership Directory and contacted them to determine if they were interested in bidding a water treatment plant for the frac water sourcing and treatment industry in Western PA.  This particular project dealt with the reuse of water used in Marcellus Shale operations.  At our initial meeting, it was clear CAVCON quickly grasped the scope of the design-build project.  In their bid, CAVCON identified the scope of the various elements within the project, and broke down the associated costs.  The detailed bid package gave me a comfort level that they thoroughly understood the scope of the project.

The project has been completed with minimal change orders.  CAVCON adhered to the scope of services outlined in their design-build bid, and delivered a quality product, at a fair price.

As a result of this positive experience, Hawbaker Engineering has inked another project with CAVCON in central PA.

Sendell Motors has worked with CAVCON for a number of years during which time we have completed several major projects: a Mitsubishi showroom, a Buick showroom and most recently conversion of the Buick dealership to Sendell Subaru dealership. An additional office building is also underway allowing the dealership’s growth.

Throughout the process, CAVCON has guided us in the design/build process. Such things as heated flooring in the service drop off area provides safety for our staff, as well as our customers. The Mitsubishi showroom design/build project CAVCON completed, was the recipient of an EPA Energy Star Award. We have come to depend on CAVCON to guide us in the most efficient use of land space, as well as energy efficiencies in each project. From concept to completion, they deliver.

CAVCON was the key component to completing this project; as they were straightforward to work with from their top key personnel down to the general laborers. We continue receiving rave reviews by visitors some four years later with kudos to CAVCON.

CAVCON was selected originally for their flexibility, attention to detail during the bidding process and concern for our rapidly approaching “need to be in by” date. It became apparent during the construction process that our schedule was rather aggressive. CAVCON, despite the inherent difficulties with the time of year our project began, operated on schedule and most importantly on budget.

I want to thank CAVCON for a great experience during both the planning phase and the building phase of our new shop. As you know, we work by consensus at the YWCA and decision-making requires getting many opinions in order to arrive at a decision. Throughout the project, you worked very respectfully with our process needs and were helpful with suggestions, alternatives, and decisions. You kept us well informed of your progress and we always felt that our questions or concerns received immediate attention.

We have worked with CAVCON for the past 20 years, they’re a big contractor with a small town feel, and have always been there for us. They do the small jobs with the same fervor and level of expertise as they do the big jobs. That’s part of why we go back to them time and time again.

I would highly recommend CAVCON to anyone considering the design/build process. They have a winning formula: experienced people and quality products.
