From Legacy to Innovation: Washington and Jefferson Unveils Upgraded Athletic Locker Rooms

CAVCON recently completed a design-build project for Washington & Jefferson College (W&J). The CAVCON team worked closely with college leadership and staff to minimize disruption throughout construction, as the building remained occupied by students and athletes during the renovation.

Our design-build expertise provided W&J with a seamless, single-point solution, where total responsibility for both design and construction rests with one trusted entity. This integrated approach eliminates the complications and delays that can arise from divided responsibilities. By leveraging years of hands-on construction knowledge, CAVCON delivers accurate project costs grounded in real-world experience, helping clients avoid surprises. Design-build projects also minimize change orders, saving both time and money, and allow projects to be completed more efficiently, ensuring high-quality results on schedule.

Originally constructed in 1968, much of the facility—particularly the locker room area—had remained largely unchanged. With the continued growth of W&J’s athletic teams and sports programs, the college recognized the need for a modern, expanded space.

While the project was initially scheduled to begin in January 2026, W&J requested an accelerated timeline to start in March 2025. Thanks to CAVCON’s design-build expertise and long-standing relationships with trusted construction partners, we were able to move the project forward efficiently and meet the college’s revised goals.

This renovation is part of W&J’s larger vision to create an integrated, modern athletics experience for its students. That vision was further highlighted with the ceremonial groundbreaking of the James David Ross Family Training Center earlier this week—an exciting step in a series of initiatives that foster competition, camaraderie, and community while honoring the proud legacy of W&J athletics.

“This project is more than a renovation—it’s a statement of pride and purpose,” said Dr. Elizabeth MacLeod Walls, President of Washington & Jefferson College. “Our student-athletes give their best every day and deserve facilities that match their dedication. These locker rooms reflect that promise.”
